Lake Rotorua
The second largest lake in the North Island, Lake Rotorua lies in a caldera, a
basin caused by volcanic activity and is surrounded by lush farmland, native bush,
Rotorua city and steaming geothermal springs and vents. Its colour can be described
as an unusual dark green-yellow due to the high content of sulphur and other
volcanic minerals.
Mokoia Island
Two kilometres from the eastern shore of Lake Rotorua lies Mokoia Island, a
wildlife sanctuary since 1921. This small, cone shaped island, is a haven for
endangered New Zealand birds and remains predator free.
It is also the home of a famous Maori legend and one of the great New Zealand
love stories reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet. Tutanekai was a young Maori man who
loved Hinemoa. Unfortunately, she was of higher birth than Tutanekai, the daughter
of a powerful chief, and the young lovers were destined to be kept apart by her
family. Determined not to be thwarted in her love, Hinemoa bravely swam to Mokoia
Island under the cover of night, lured by the music of Tutanekai's flute, to be with
her beloved. According to legend, once Hinemoa's family discovered where she was,
they accepted her choice of husband and the two tribes were united forever more.
